Ronda Rousey Not ‘Heavy Enough’ To Headline Pay-Per-View Event Dana White Declares
Many have been wondering why the biggest draw of mixed martial arts in Ronda Rousey is always being relegated to a co-headliner of pay-per-view bouts. The way she has been slowly transitioning to film and modeling, followers of the reigning women's bantamweight champion are wondering why she is not given by UFC President Dana White her own right to carry a fight night herself. White had some things to say to clarify the issue.
"It has nothing to do with her not being a star," UFC president Dana White revealed in the latest edition of The Download at UFC.com this week. "If she was the highest weighted champion on the card, she would be the main event, but you have two guys that are middleweights and she weighs 135 pounds -- so she's the co-main."
To be fair, this has been the standing policy of the UFC. If there are two title fights in the night, the weight class which is heavier than the other will be the final fight of the night but that does not mean that it is the main event. This is the second time that Rousey is fighting as a co-headliner to a UFC event that will have the Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort as the final bout of the night. The last time Rousey preceded a Weidman fight, they both won, so it appears Rowdy has no qualms about being billed under another fighter.
Her only issue was the delay of her fight. She was originally scheduled to face Cat Zingano much earlier on Jan.3 which was pushed back for more than a month due to her challenger's back injury. Rousey said during an interview that she is being a professional about it and will show up when the UFC asks her to fight. The silver lining, she bared, is that she will be able to strut her ware in her hometown at Staples Center in Los, Angeles California. Rousey worked as a bartender/waitress in one of the restaurants in Los Angeles before her mixed martial arts stint, and she raring to put on a show.
White was also ecstatic on the prospect of holding the event at Hollywood given how much the outfit wants to make things right the last time it scheduled a fight there. The UFC had to cancel for only the second time the Jose Aldo carrier by bringing in Rousey and Weidman as olive branches.
