Prince William and Kate Middleton have announced their royal baby name of choice as George Alexander Louis. The couple confirmed the news in a statement released by Kensington Palace this afternoon. The update came just hours after the royal trio left for the Duchess of Cambridge's parents' home in Bucklebury, Berkshire. William and Kate announce the news on their official website also.

The Duke and Duchess and Cambridge have somewhat broken tradition, choosing three names for the baby. Harry, William and Charles all have four Christian names in total. Of course, Her Majesty the Queen has three names: Elizabeth Alexandra Mary.

A short statement from the Clarence House Twitter account: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis.The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge."

Kate Middleton and Prince William came up with the perfect blend of traditional and modern name.

Of course, the Queen will be delighted at the name George - her father was King George VI. On a sentimental note, Queen Elizabeth II's father was George IV - the baby's name is a direct reference to his own great-great grandfather. The Queen was 26 years old when her father died, and since she was heartbroken about his early passing, it is a touching tribute to see the next generation George.

Alexander: This powerful and wildly popular name means "man's defender" and "warrior." Historically, Alexander was the name of the King of Macedon who was famously known as Alexander the Great.
