Royal Variety Performance: Prince William And Kate Middleton Replaces Prince Charles And Camilla Parker-Bowles In Representing Queen Elizabeth [PHOTOS]
The first Royal Variety Performance for the Cambridges, Prince William and Kate Middleton are set to represent Queen Elizabeth in the annual gala event. A royal tradition that started in 1921, Prince Charles and wife Camilla Parker-Bowles are taking the back seat for this year's event as the younger generation of royals are standing in for the Royal Family.
"The Duke and Duchess are delighted to attend the forthcoming Royal Variety Performance," Buckingham Palace spokesperson told Daily Mail. "Members of the Royal Family will continue to support the gala evenings. As with any other invitation, attendance by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be assessed on a case-by-case basis."
Together with Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth last attended the red carpet gala in 2012, while Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles represented her on last year's gala on which the Queen is the patron. Due to her busy November schedules, which includes this weekend's Remembrance Sunday commemorations, the reigning monarch chose to Will and Kate to represent her this year as she takes part in other public appearances.
Representing the Queen for this kind of event is a big step up for both William and Catherine and "a sign of the monarch's esteem" for the couple, according to royal watchers. It's been a tradition that the Queen and the Prince of Wales are taking turns to attend the show, but this year a new generation of royals are stepping in to help her.
With so many rumours surrounding the royal family, like Will giving up the throne because of Kate's difficult pregnancy, this kind of event will show that their family is working together and not fighting for the throne. The show's proceeds will help aid the Entertainment Artiste's Benevolent Fund as it dates back to the reign of King George V and Queen Mary.
To be held in London Palladium on Nov. 13, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be treated with various performance from U.S. singer Bette Midler, Dame Shirley Basset and comic Sarah Millica. Britain's Got Talent winners Collabro, estranged ex's Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran, former Disney star Demi Lavato, tenor Alfie Boe and the whole cast of musical revival "Miss Saigon" are also in attendance.
