Rumors: Nexus 5 vs. iPhone 6
It seems we won't be seeing the iPhone 6 until Apple launches it on its usual September release in 2014, the rumor has already been churning for quite some time now.
There have been many ideas swirling about the upcoming iPhone 6 but nothing is confirmed. The discussions about how it might compare against its rival devices are interesting. Let's take a look at how the iPhone 6 concepts stack up against Nexus 5, its major opponent.
Apple has been consistent in retaining its iconic device design so even if there was a shift from a glass to an all aluminum back panel, it's expected that the iPhone 6 will have more or less the same shape. It can't be a bad thing because Apple has always been the winner of build quality and aesthetics.
If the rumors are true that the display will be between 4.5-inches to 5-inches, then the chassis design will change to an extent. It could be that Apple would opt for an edge-to-edge display with narrow bezels, which would dramatically change the font fascia look. Apple will most likely continue its TouchID fingerprint scanning technology with the iPhone 6.
Although the Nexus 5 looks quite uninspiring and dull in press and product photos, the Google handset actually looks sleek in person. Its bodyshell is a nice contoured design with a robust-feeling polycarbonate material. It's lightweight and thin with a narrow bezel that keeps things sharp.
When it comes to display, Apple will likely keep the image quality set by its "Retina" technology, current IPS LCD screens with pixel density of 330 ppi. Other rumors suggested Apple could switch to the IGZO technology or OLED. But this switch needs resolution of other issues like battery efficiency and the possibility of OLED panel use that doesn't actually enable flexibility but only allows creative screen implementation. There have also been talks about Apple using Sapphire Glass and this could mean cracked iPhone displays a thing of the past.
The Nexus 5 uses LG's True HD IPS+ LCD technology, which is a competitive display that offers very sharp visual quality. It has a full HD 19920 x 1080 pixel resolution on a 4.95 inches panel at 445 ppi. The color is rich with great quality and robust brightness.
The Nexus 5 is running Android 4.4 KitKat while the iPhone 6 might run iOS 8, which could expand the TouchID feature and add more multimedia services such as Apple TV and iTunes Radio. Nexus also packs a powerful Qualcomm SnapDragon 800 quad-core Krait chip at 2.3GHz with Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. The iPhone 6 has the 64-bit A7 processor technology which could possibly even be bumped to A7X or A8. Apple's current iPhone is battery-friendly and it is not something that the Nexus 5 is strongly suited for.
