Ryan Gosling is a man who believes that idle hands are the devil's tools. The Blue Valentine actor thinks that if Hollywood celebrities get some real work done then the world will be a better place.

"I'd never had a real job," confessed Gosling in an interview for his GQ January 2011 cover.

The actor worked on a sandwhich shop after he starred in the romantic drama The Notebook, opposite Rachael McAdams. Gosling is not ashamed of doing any "real job." He is convinced that the problem with Tinseltown is that nobody works.

"They have meals. They go to Pilates. But it's not enough," says the rumoured new boyfriend of Gossip Girls' Blake Lively.

"So they do drugs. If everybody had a pile of rocks in their backyard and spent every day moving them from one side of the yard to the other, it would be a much happier place."

Two-years after he starred in The Notebook and after he had worked in a sandwich shop, Gosling earned his first nomination at the Oscars for his turn as a drug addict in Half-Nelson. Now, with Blue Valentine, Ryan is up for another race in the awards season, scoring a nomination for his performance from the Golden Globes.

In Blue Valentine, Gosling plays Dean while Michelle Williams plays Cindy. Dean's and Cindy's relationship has seen better days as they struggle with the demands and expectations of work and family life. At breaking point, the couple steals away to a hotel as they revisit romantic memories of their courtship. Dean and Cindy have one night to try and rekindle their passion, and save their marriage.

Blue Valentine is currently showing in theatres.
