Sacha Baron Cohen's latest movie alter ego left a mark on the 2012 Oscars red carpet by spilling an urn of ashes all over TV host Ryan Seacrest.

Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen, Cohen's title character in "The Dictator" claimed that the urn contained the ashes of North Korea's former leader, Kim Jong-Il.

"Ryan, hello! Death to the West!" Aladeen joyfully proclaimed as he headed towards Seacrest, who was working the red carpet for "E! News." Aladeen was dressed in full military regalia and was also accompanied by two uniformed ladies.

He told Seacrest that he was wearing John Galliano but the socks are from "Kmart." "As Saddam Hussein once said to me, 'Socks are socks. Don't waste money,'" he added.

It was then he produced the golden urn with the late Kim Jong-Il's face printed on it and said that he was glad to have been able to share the night with the North Korean strongman who died in December and was succeeded by his son.

"I love it here because it gave me an opportunity to bring my dear friend and doubles tennis partner Kim Jong-Il," Aladeen said. "It was his dream to come to the Oscars and be sprinkled all over the red carpet and Halle Berry's chest again," he added.

A fumbling Aladeen then tripped and poured the ashes over Seacrest's Burberry tuxedo.

"If someone asks what you are wearing, tell them Kim Jong-Il," Aladeen told Seacrest. Meanwhile, Seacrest looked visibly stunned. "Have fun this evening," Seacrest glumly replied as the security guards ushered Aladeen away.

"I had an idea something was coming, I didn't know in what fashion or form," Seacrest told E! co-hosts Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic. "We don't even know what to say!" Osbourne said, giggling loudly.

"Do you know how lucky you are? You are the one chosen on the red carpet!" teased Rancic. "Is this a vision of luck?" Seacrest replied, unhappily.

Seacrest carried on interviewing celebrities but was forced to explain his messy appearance, milking sympathy from stars including Jennifer Lopez. "You're a victim of comedy!" Tina Fey proclaimed.

Academy Awards organizers had originally said Cohen's latest character would not be welcome at the show saying that they did not think it would be appropriate to use the red carpet as a venue for a movie promotional stunt.

Cohen, in a "YouTube" video as Aladeen threatened the West with unimaginable consequences unless the sanction was lifted. Oscar's producer Brian Grazer confirmed that the star of "The Dictator" would be there in character and that officials were thrilled.

Cohen's new comedy is about a nutty tyrant that is part Muammar Gaddafi and a little Saddam Hussein with hints of Kim Jong-Il. It will be released in the United States on May 11, in the United Kingdom on May 18 and in Australia on June 7.

Cohen, who has two young daughters with his Australian actress wife Isla Fisher, has previously crashed events and awards shows while dressed as his other famous characters like Borat, Bruno and Ali G.
