Salim Mehajer dodged investigation for unauthorised road blocking on his weekend wedding extravaganza
Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer has managed to dodge an investigation into the unauthorised blocking of road last weekend for his lavish wedding. The millionaire property developer sailed through a voting held by the Auburn City Council on Wednesday night.
The voting was held in a packed council meeting moved by Auburn Councillor George Campbell. Even though the investigation by the Minister of Local Government failed to go underway, Mehajer was fined AU$220 for the act. Councillor Irene Simms said the Council’s decision to let him walk away with a fine of AU$220 was disappointing.
A large crowd gathered outside Council building with placards to show their support for Mehajer when he arrived at the meeting in his white Ferrari. The petition with more than 3,000 signatures seeking resignation of Mehajer as the Auburn Deputy Mayor was countered with another petition also bearing 3,000 plus signature appealing for his stay.
“It was a rent-a-crowd,” Simms said when asked about the cheer squad outside chambers.
Belmore GP and community leader Jamal Rifi has backed Mehajer in an exclusive writing on the deputy mayor for the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday. “Having a big wedding isn’t an indictable offence,” he wrote. “It is his own money and as a private citizen he is entitled to spend it the way he likes. Having such a big wedding improved the local economy in much more tangible and long ways than the brief temporary inconvenience caused by the road closure. If a law was broken, then fine him.”
The 29-year-old deputy mayor has been facing sharp criticism from the residents of the Lidcombe street as well as among his colleagues for his highly opulent and showy wedding ceremony. It caused enough inconvenience to the common people who faced road blockades for hours, and the residents of Lidcombe street were also sent a letter asking them to remove cars from the street else they would be towed if they came in the way.
He also charted four helicopters and his bride Ayesha made a grand entry, arriving with a motorcade of luxury cars and motorbikes.
