Sam Watson Says Mayweather–Pacquiao Fight On May 2 Nears Completion
After arduous months of talks and discussions, the sight of the much-anticipated mega-buck fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao becomes clearer. Sam Watson, who is close friend of Mayweather's adviser Al Haymon, say the negotiation for the Mayweather–Pacquiao fight is wrapping up.
Speaking at a press conference at Rockefeller Center in New York on Jan. 14 via The Guardian, Watson revealed both camps are working together to finalise details to make the fight happen on May 2. He said the Mayweather–Pacquiao fight will be an HBO–Showtime joint pay-per-event—much like when the said TV networks joined forces to deliver the Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson bout in 2002.
"They're working on the monies now and everything they've got to work on to make it happen," Watson said. "I can't wait. It's going to be huge."
Watson highlighted his strong bond with Haymon to further remove any possibility of a doubt about the recent statements he made. More than being just a colleague, Watson said Haymon is his best friend. He is optimistic the Mayweather–Pacquiao fight will arrive at a settlement to give fans what they have been craving for for years.
Earlier this week, Top Rank Chief Executive Officer Bob Arum said Pacquiao had signed off on all Mayweather's demands for the super fight. It has been stressed that Pacquiao's camp is now only waiting on Mayweather to sign his side of the contract.
Pacquiao's publicist Fred Sternburg, however, has squashed the rumours the Filipino had already agreed to Mayweather's terms. Sternburg told BBC there is still a long way to go, contrary to what is being widely reported in various news outlets. Nevertheless, Sternburg attested the negotiations are, indeed, moving in a positive direction.
If both camps are able to seal the deal, it is anticipated an announcement would be made no later than the end of January. The Mayweather–Pacquiao fight will be the most lucrative fight in boxing history since Lewis and Tyson, which took place more than 10 years ago in Memphis. It would be a remarkable bout for the sport and would certainly be received passionately by boxing fans all over the globe.
