Samsung Galaxy Gear: Boasts Android Jelly Bean, NFC, 6-8GB storage, Lots of Colour Design and 10 Hours Battery
Samsung is finally joining the smartwatch arena with their upcoming Galaxy Gear, scheduled to appear at IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany on September 4. Galaxy Gear features Gear Manager, dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and 10 hours of battery life.
Software Version
According to AmongTech, Galaxy Gear will run Android Jelly Bean version which includes default features such as Google Now and Project Butter. If the device runs Android 4.2, it will have the Daydream screensaver mode for feeds and applications. Having Android Jelly Bean makes Galaxy Gear compatible to several Android smartphones and tablets such as Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3.
The Gear Manager
Evleaks hinted the screenshot of Galaxy Gear's official companion app called "Gear Manager." The screenshot confirms that the model of Galaxy Gear is SM-V700 which can pair to your smartphone automatically via Near Field Communication (NFC) or Bluetooth connectivity using the manual setup.
The Gear Manager feature options such as clocks, my apps, Samsung apps, find my watch, settings and help.
Battery Life
Information from AmongTech says that the Galaxy Gear will only have a battery life of up to 10 hours, which is pretty short than expected. The 10 hours battery rating seems too low compared to a smartphone which usually lasts up to 15 hours of full usage within the day. Hopefully, Samsung installs a built-in power saving mode to make Galaxy Gear last longer. Samsung hasn't confirmed yet if the information about the 10 hours battery life is correct which was revealed by insiders.
Storage Capacity
Samsung is going to release two variants of Galaxy Gear, one with 6GB internal storage while the other features 8GB. Although this internal memory size wouldn't be a problem for storing apps, the issue would be the battery life - how enjoyable would Galaxy Gear be if the battery life is only up to 10 hours?
Multiple Colour Design
Samsung is initially shipping four different colour designs for Galaxy Gear. For week 39, Samsung will release white, orange, gray and black then on week 40, a white gold variant is expected to be released as well.
The release dates of shipment might shift early or sooner by one week or two but interested buyers can expect additional colours coming up for the Galaxy Gear.
Release Date
Samsung's executive vice president for mobile business, Lee Young-Hee confirms that Galaxy Gear won't be featuring a flexible display and runs Android OS. However, the executive vice president did not confirm the exact release date of Galaxy Gear. The smartwatch is expected to be unveiled on September 4 at IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany, joining the Galaxy Note 3.
