IPS LCD Screen on Samsung Galaxy Note 3?
ET News from Korea reported that Samsung is working on an LCD screen panel variant of the upcoming Galaxy Note 3 alongside with an OLED variant which will be sold individually in the market. According to claims, Samsung is having difficulty to supply more units of Galaxy Note 3 with AMOLED displays due to shortage of OLED panels.
The Web site also said that Samsung is now working with two Japanese companies to make IPS LCD panel for Galaxy Note 3 and Sharp may be one of its suppliers.
LCD and OLED Displays
LCD or Liquid Crystal Display found in mobile devices start with a backlight "that's always on" and does require light in order to produce black, white and colours. Most high-end LCD displays create accurate colours and greys; however, it may need calibration to produce weaker red, blue and purple for power consumption management. LCD is also known to age slower and withstand thousands of hours of usage.
OLED or Organic light-emitting diode does require light to produce white and colours but never for "black." This quality of OLED makes it a battery friendly display compared to LCD and often produces brighter images. Unfortunately, OLED often suffers oversaturation of "greens" and ages faster compared to LCDs. Another downside is the cost of OLED panels which makes some mobile phones expensive such as from Samsung.
