Samsung Galaxy Products to Get Android 4.0 Updates in Q1 2012
Samsung intends to line up its Galaxy product lines for the much-awaited update to the new version of the Android mobile operating system, the Android 4.0, by the first few months of 2012.
According to Digital Trends, Samsung has revealed that the upgrades will roll out by the first quarter of the coming year, with the bestselling Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note set to receive the new OS also known as Ice Cream Sandwich.
The staggered updates will eventually reach most of the high-end Galaxy smartphones and tablet computers that Samsung had released this year, including the devices that will hit Australia this month following the lifting of the ban for the products to be sold.
The Australian High Court ruled with finality that the Samsung Galaxy flagship products can now be marketed after it dumped the injunction previously given to Apple earlier this year.
While the presence of Samsung gadgets in the Australian market has been ascertained by the courts, Samsung said this week that updates for the Android-powered devices will be mostly dictated by prevailing "market situation and carriers' requirements."
That means for the first three months of 2012, major telcos in various markets will be largely given freehand by Samsung to deploy the new ICS, depending on how these companies should deem the updates to be received by the devices they already sold.
The mode and timeline of the updates will be based on how quick telcos and handset vendors would be able to adjust the Android 4.0 as companies like HTC, Motorola and Samsung add their unique flavour on the OS prior to its deployment, Digital Trends said.
So far, reviews on the ICS has been mostly positive, with experts praising Android engineers for adjusting the mobile platform to maximise ease of user experience.
Digital Trends lauded the new features thrown in with the ICS, among them the Face Unlock mechanism that Samsung noted can now be experienced through the recently released Galaxy Nexus.
Aside from Samsung, HTC and Motorola have also indicated that their signature products will be updated to the new OS at about the same time next year.
