After beating Apple in sales and recently in a destruction test conducted by CNET, Samsung's Galaxy S4 won more trounced the competition by winning over the iPhone 5 in a speed test made by Which?, a consumer watchdog.

The Telegraph reports that several smartphones underwent benchmark tests to measure processor and memory performance to show speed in photo editing, running graphic-intensive games and using several apps at the same time.

The S4 got a mark of 3,188 in the industry-recognised test versus Apple's 1,664 score. The good mark which confirmed that the flagship of the South Korean tech giant is the fastest smartphone is because of the device's 1.9GHz quad-core processor.

The HTC One, which features quad-core 1.7-inch processor and 2GB RAM is the second fastest, followed by the Sony Xperia Z, Google Nexus 4, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and BlackBerry Z10. Apple's iPhone 5 was in seventh place.

"We put all the handsets through the same tests. Undoubtedly, Apple will upgrade its next iPhone when it launches this autumn ... For the moment, Samsung's Galaxy S4 is the phone to beat when it comes to speed," The Telegraph quoted Which?

In a separate speed test by GadgetJM between the two devices, results showed almost equal speeds in performing certain tasks, but the iPhone was a bit ahead of the S4 in this trial.

IVyktorX's speed test between the two devices showed the S4 being ahead most of the time.

Another test conducted previously by Techradar between the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 showed the Apple device was faster in three aspects - turn on, web and video.

However, in the Australian Financial Review, the iPhone 5 is included in the daily's list of Top 3 Contenders for Smartphone Supremacy. Besides the Apple device, included in the list are the HTC One and the BlackBerry Z10.

In explaining its choice, the newspaper pointed to the build quality of the iPhone 5 and the massive number of apps created for it that makes the model a compelling choice for business users.
