Samsung Galaxy S5 to Forgo Flexible Form Factor?
According to Trusted Reviews, contrary to the latest rumours, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will not have a flexible or curved form factor. Unnamed sources who have reportedly talked to news outlets in South Korea, have claimed that Samsung "is highly unlikely" to design its flagship Samsung Galaxy S5 with a curved display like that of the LG G Flex or Samsung Galaxy Round because of increased costs and low yield rates.
The consumers don't seem to be fans of curved-display smartphones with Samsung selling only around 10,000 Galaxy Round units since the handset was released in Korea in early October 2013, while the LG G Flex is reportedly suffering from slow sales as well.
"The poor sales performance for the Galaxy Round does not come as a big surprise," said Dominic Sunnebo, Global Consumer Insight Director for Kantar Worldpanel, to International Business Times UK in a CNET report.
"Consumers love product innovation but need to be clearly told what benefits it will give them before they buy it," Sunnebo added.
It has been claimed though that the widely anticipated Samsung Galaxy S5 might benefit from a curved panel, suggesting that new display technologies are still on its early development stage and not yet ready to be out on a handset expected to sell millions of units.
Analyst Kim Jong-hyun of Seoul-based Eugene Investment and Securities told the Korean Herald that the flexible panel's current capacity is "not high enough for the Galaxy S5," which will be released in early 2014.
"Curved ones will be unveiled late next year as a Galaxy variant rather than as a flagship model," said Kim Jong-hyun in a report from the Korean Herald.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 appears to have missed out on the raved curved display, but the currently unconfirmed device is reportedly bestowed with high-end components. According to the latest Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours, the S4's successor will sport a 64-bit Qualcomm SnapDragon processor with 3 GB of RAM, a 16 MP camera and Google's latest mobile operating system, Android 4.4 KitKat. The Krait processor that's part of the chip is said to be clocked at 2.5 GHz.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 design has also been said to see the company change its old form factors to an all new metal one. The device is speculated to be announced on Q1 of 2014.
