Samsung and HP to Release Windows RT Tablet?
News about Samsung and HP's plans of releasing Windows RT tablets are circulating the web. If this plan would push through, this would certainly have a great effect in the tablet market that is currently dominated by Apple and Google's Android.
Bloomberg first published this story stating that Samsung is already planning a Windows RT Tablet. The Windows RT tablet from Samsung would be utilizing a Qualcomm Snapdgragon processor (probably S4) and would also use a similar browsing interface with Windows Phone. The release date for Samsung's Windows-based tablets is reported to be around October, 2012.
As for HP, the company remarked that they would not support Windows RT initially. Instead, HP will be developing tablets which would taregt the business market through utilizing Intel's x86 chips and Microsoft Windows 8 operating system. A representative from HP explained the company's decision stating the following:
"I can confirm that at HP, we continue to look at using ARM processors in business and consumer products. However, our first Windows 8 tablet will be on the x86 platform focused on the business market. The decision to go with x86 was influenced by input from our customers. The robust and established ecosystem of x86 applications provides the best customer experience at this time and in the immediate future."
HP's supposed plan to utilize Windows RT has been put on hold. Though HP has not given any specific reason for this, there are rumors that the high licensing fee (US$90 per copy of Windows RT) and directly competing with a Microsoft device convinced the company to put this project on hold.
IHS ISuppli recently released their research report and showed that Apple is still dominant as the number one tablet in the market. Apple is accountable for 58% market share with 11.8 million iPads shipped globally. Samsung was ranked second with a considerable less market share of 11% while Amazon Kindle Fire was placed third with 5.8%. If these plans for a Windows RT tablet would push through, other players in the tablet market could have a bigger market share in terms of tablets.
