Samsung. LG Work on Futuristic Smartphones with Bendable Screens
LG Display Co. had recently announced that it will soon show the public its most futuristic mobile phone there can be in the market, The Wall Street Journal reported.
LG said that the mobile phones to be showcased at the Society for Information Display exhibition have bendable organic light-emitting diode screen. The screen will feature a five-inch flexible OLED display.
The smartphones with bendable screens is the latest offering from LG in cooperation with its market partner OLED technology which was more famous for LG's television products.
LG was hesitant at first to use their OLED technology with their mobile products. However, LG Electronics showed great potential in the market as demands for 55-inch curved screen OLED televisions increased in April. The increased was seen just after the product's launch in January.
Seeing the users' preference and warm reception with OLED screens, LG had decided to take the risk of using the bendable OLED screens in replacement of the conventional liquid crystal display.
According to the official statement of Yeo Sang Deok, LG Display's Chief Technology Officer, "recent trends indicate that the small-and-medium-sized display market is moving toward high resolution and low power consumption, and the large panel market to OLED and Ultra HD. The LG Display is ready to meet the rapid need for new display advancements."
Min-Jeong Lee, in his blog with The Wall Street Jornal, explained that product innovation is the most challenging task for mobile designers among all smartphones manufacturers, with second-tier handset makers including LG chasing industry leaders' hardware and software with alacrity."
Mobile industry analysts said that OLED technology has an advantage as compared to LCDs in terms of bendable screen designs. Analysts saw that this is the main reason why LG had made the decision to make that shift to OLED displays for their mobile products.
Analysts had also pointed out that the innovative bendable screens will be a fresh look into the mobile industry where better screens and faster chips remain on high demands. They said that "bendables" and "rollables" are definitely futuristic innovations in the display technology for screens are unexpectedly flexible.
As an introduction to bendable screen displays, LG also announced that it will introduce a flexible-screen smartphone later this year. This flexible-screen mobile phones served as prefaced to the flexible displays.
It is to be recalled that the Korean Company Samsung Electronics have also revealed a prototype of a bendable screen display.
Both Samsung and LG predicted a large market for such futuristic mobile phone displays. The company both aimed for shatter-proof screen designs and thinner mobile body displays. However, unlike LG, Samsung remained mum as to when it is going to launch its bendable smartphones.
LG Electronics places third place, after Samsung Electronics Co., in the mobile industry competition during the first quarter.
Rumor has it that Apple Inc was also planning to introduce smartphones with bendable features as discussed with its earnings call in April.
Big suppliers for the mobile companies said that mass production of smartphones with bendable screens, which users can literally roll and bend freely, is still a long shot at present.
