Ralph McQuarrie, the artist behind the designs made for the conceptualization of the popular character of Darth Vader and other Star Wars characters like R2-D2 has passed away. He was 82.

George Lucas, the director of Hollywood's big screen success 'Star Wars' confessed that it was McQuarrie who was the first ever person he got to help him with his vision for the iconic project. His amazing contribution according to Lucas has inspired everyone in the entire cast and crew of the popular trilogy.

In fact, he said in an interview that when he cannot think of a certain word to express ideas he has in mind, then he could just always use any of the illustrations made by Ralph, and for sure all that he has to say will be spoken through the artist's creations already.

It was also added revelation that it was all due to the drawings of McQuarrie that won the pitch for 20th Century Fox to agree then to be the financiers of the movie. McQuarrie also made a lot of concept designs for other big projects like 'E.T.,' 'Battlestar Galactica,' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.' It was for the last mentioned film that he even got himself an Oscar award.

McQuarrie was also offered work to be the designer of the prequel trilogy of 'Star Wars' but he turned it down and the job was given instead to Doug Chiang from Industrial Light & Magic. Since then, McQuarrie retired and all his 'Star Wars' creations were featured in various exhibitions.

Such artists like McQuarrie may have not been as popular as any other celebrity in the industry, but simply deserve such great praise for all the works he has done in his life. Creatively.
