'Scandal’ Season 4: Fitz, Olivia and Mellie’s Relationship Status
There were some major conflicts between Fitz and Mellie in the truncated season three of "Scandal." Fitz lashed out at Mellie after he came to know about her affair with Andrew. Afterwards, when he got to know that his father had raped Mellie, he was understanding and remorseful. The truth about the past made Fitz see Mellie in a new light and with a new found understanding. Also, the grief of Jerry's death, Fitz and Mellie's son, brought them a little more closer. However, the new understanding and bonding did not shut the door on Olivia.
Talking about Fitz and Mellie's relationship and about Olivia's presence, Tony Goldwyn said to Gold Derby, "They're kind of more bonded than they've ever been in a funny way, but Olivia in their minds is an essential component in that. They've transcended into some new place I think, not that they won't backside."
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor had said that "Olivia is necessary and essential to them in so many ways [including] to Fitz personally, and Mellie acknowledges that by calling Olivia herself." He was talking about Mellie's call to Olivia after a grieving Fitz asked "where's Olvia?" President Fitz was expected to make the speech after the re-election and he needed Olivia to be there and fix things.
However, Olivia did not pick up the call, as she was on a plane and sitting beside her was Jake. And, she did not inform Fitz about her departure to an undisclosed location. Goldwyn has no clue how Fitz is going to react when he finds out about Olivia's departure.
"I don't know what the hell Fitz is going to think when he finds out Olivia's disappeared," said Goldwyn.
"Scandal" Season 3 wrapped-up with multiple cliff-hangers and a big revelation. Rowan was unmasked as the man who could go to any extreme extent, including killing President Fitz's son Jerry, to achieve his goals and to take his revenge. Harrison was the only person who could see through Rowan's evil game and figured out that it is Rowan who had planned and executed the killing of Jerry.
Columbus Short, who plays Harrison, is not returning in Season 4 to reprise his role. It indicates that the only person who knew the truth is dead. With Olivia gone and Rowan back as command, Fitz might be heading towards some more turbulent times.
Meanwhile, there were reports that some scenes of the upcoming season will be filmed in Washington, D.C. The shooting of "Scandal" takes place in Los Angeles.
