Scarlett Johansson will be starring in the Hollywood adaptation of the popular anime "Ghost in the Shell." The actress was cast to play the role of Major Motoko Kusanagi and fans wondered if she will also be appearing nude in the movie just like the manga character.

Readers of The Hollywood Reporter have expressed their interest in the movie, particularly in the possibility that Johansson may be appearing naked in it. The actress will reportedly be playing the cyborg cop Motoko Kusanagi, who as per Women Write About Comics appears mostly nude in the manga. Writer Claire Napier cites the anime's opening scene, where Kusanagi's "nipple shapes are visible and she has no apparent genitalia. " Even in advertising the movie, it shows the character fully nude. The site shared a photo showing Kusanagi "penetrated by wires of varying thicknesses, gun in hand and back arched so that her left breast is clear in profile and her buttocks are rounded and elevated, head tilted back." Likewise, the trailer below visibly shows the cyborg's nude body.

Fans of Scarlett Johansson wondered if she will be living up to her role when she stars in DreamWorks' version of "Ghost in the Shell." THR reader squidb8 expressed his interest in the movie if the actress will be "running around half naked." Reader Admiral General III also hopes Johansson, as the lead star Motoko Kusanagi, would reenact the naked scenes. Some supposed being nude wouldn't be a problem for the actress since according to reader Harry Palm she was also naked in "Under The Skin."

It's still uncertain how the Hollywood version of the anime will be made and if Scarlett Johansson will be appearing mostly naked in the film. But as per THR reader Count Zero Interrupt, it's unlikely Johansson will be nude in the movie. She could reportedly be covered with costume from the neck down just like her Black Widow character in "Avengers." Likewise, Wired claims Motoko Kusanagi could be changed to an Americanised name.

"Ghost in the Shell" will be directed by "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Ruper Sanders under the production of Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul. William Wheeler will write the script. No details have been revealed yet on who will star alongside Scarlett Johansson. Likewise, a release date has yet to be announced.
