'Scarpetta Series' Author Patricia Cornwell Missing Millions; Sues Wealth Management Firm for $100 Million
Alleged Firm Took Advantage of Her Bipolar Disorder
Mystery writer Patricia Cornwell is missing a lot of money. To get it back, she's suing her wealth management firm.
Cornwell claimed,in court documents, that the firm took advantage of her bipolar disorder. In her suit, the best-selling crime fiction author said that she first noticed that something was wrong back in 2009 when her net worth remained at $15 million for the past four years.
The author did had some flow of wealth, millions of dollars as reported in the media from her widely popular books, including those featuring forensic investigator Kay Scarpetta. So, where did all the money go?
Cornwell blames the firm. She is claiming $100 million in damages, negligence, and breach of contract. For its part, the wealth management firm says the author, known for its lavish lifestyle, should blame her spending habits.
The firm said it was Cornwell who mismanaged her own wealth, citing her lease of an apartment in New York City that costs $40,000 per month. She also spent $5 million in private jet service.
The author also acquired properties in Concord, Massachusetts, worth $11 million.
In her suit, Cornwell alleged that because of the "stressful ordeal" she missed a book deadline that cost her $15 million.
