Fear and terror struck the onlookers when they saw what was coming, but she could not hear anyone trying to save her life - until it was too late.

Cairnlea's Theresa Ho, 15, is the most recent fatality in a train accident in Australia.

News.com reports about 15 witnesses at the level crossing and on the platforms at Ginifer station in Melbourne's north screamed for Ho to stop when she ran out in front of a city-bound V/Line train.

Authorities at Monday's train accident in Melbourne said Ho may have been listening to music with her earphones at the time of the accident.

''Witnesses yelled out for her to stop and she did for a second and then ran across,'' said Sergeant Rob Atkinson, from the transit safety division of Victoria Police.

Police found a set of earphones at the scene.

The Age reported that paramedics arrived at the scene at 7:50am but could not revive Ho.

"When the first paramedics arrived about six minutes (after the collision) they found the girl was in cardiac arrest," said Paul Bentley, spokesman for Ambulance Victoria. He added, "They treated her for about 10 minutes but unfortunately she died at the scene."

''She has gone past several people waiting at the pedestrian boom gate and she has made her way around that boom gate and unfortunately she has not seen that city-bound train from Bendigo,'' a police spokeswoman told The Age.

Ho was a student a St Albans Catholic Regional College. Her schoolmates will be offered counselling.

"The sudden passing of one of our students has come as a terrible shock for the school community," principal Christina Utri said.

St Albans residents and traders told the Herald Sun they had been campaigning for more than 20 years for an underpass at the crossing.

A Facebook page has been set up for Ho, who has been described to be "caring, loving and always optimistic."
