Serena Williams Blissful After Winning the WTA Championships
Serena Williams has definitely a lot to rejoice for. Williams has just won the finals of the World Tennis Association (WTA) Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey.
The World No 1 defeated Lina 2-6, 6-3, and 6-0. This victory is Serena's second consecutive win. She won in 2012, beating Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova.
Serena lost to Li Na, who currently ranks World No 3, in the first set. However, Serena claimed the second and the third sets effortlessly. Li Na didn't even get to score on the third set.
"It was an awesome year of tennis, for me," said Serena. "To finish with the Billie Jean trophy after 40 years is just really exciting," she added. "I have not had time to think about my victory, but I am really glad, I am really happy that I was able to finish it off," Serena said.
"I had a really long year, and I really didn't expect to get through with this match," Serena said in an interview after the game. "I really cannot believe that I won, I was so exhausted," she added. "Did I really win, because Li Na played so well," said Serena.
Li Na, on the other hand, wasn't so happy with the way she played. "I had no more energy left, after the first set and a half," said Li Na. "It is a tough tournament, and I played 5 days in a row, not to mention that all my opponents are in the top eight, so I never had an easy match," Li Na added.
Truly enough, this tennis season has been so good to her. Serena has won 78 out of her 82 matches. She is currently World No 1, and there is no doubt that she will stay in that position for a long time. She has won 11 titles, including two Grand Slams in the U.S. Open and the French Open. She has a total of 17 Grand Slam records now.
Serena's victory in the WTA championships has won her prize money amounting to $2.15 million dollars. Her annual winnings, up-to-date, are now equivalent to $12.4 million dollars.
