Serena Williams Proves She’s a Better Player Than Maria Sharapova

Serena Williams has once again proven herself that she is a better player than Maria Sharapova. She had recently ousted the Russian athlete in their semifinals match at the 2014 Sony Open. Williams continues to dominate their head-to-head tally, 16-2.

Williams and Sharapova had met in the previous year's Sony Open finals, when the top-ranked athlete lost the first set, but made a tremendous comeback winning two consecutive sets 4-6, 6-3 and 6-0. This time, Williams didn't let Sharapova win any sets and beat the Russian in two straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3. Even though Sharapova started the match strong, Williams rebound back from the gaps by serving better and hitting more aces.

"I knew if I wanted to stay in the tournament and make another final, I just had to play better," Williams told ESPN. According to the 32-year-old athlete she knew that when she plays good tennis, she gives her opponent a tough time to beat her.

When Williams committed her mistakes during the first and second sets, she revealed she just needed to get motivated and attentive of their match which indeed worked for her.

"I was just trying to regroup and get my mind together and just try to get back focused and just try to get things going again," Williams said. She will face either Li Na or Dominika Cibulkova in the 2014 Sony Open finals.

Sharapova was gracious in her defeat. Before the duo clashed in their semifinals match, Sharapova has acknowledged that Williams has always been a tough opponent for her, Tennis Earth reported.

"It's no secret that she's been a big challenge of mine, an opponent that I would love to beat," Sharapova said. She added she knew that she needed to step up her game to beat Williams, but she wasn't able to do so every time they clash.

"Someone like Serena, who plays with so much confidence and so much power, you really need to take those few opportunities that you have," Sharapova said.

Nonetheless, Sharapova is grateful that she was able to play with Williams again.
