Serena Williams Wins 6th US Open For Her 18th Grand Slam Title And Banks Nearly US$5 Million
World no. 1 Serena Williams won her sixth US Open victory and secured her 18th Grand Slam title. Williams ended her tennis season in a match that was not close at all -- a 6-3, 6-3 victory over her pal Caroline Wozniacki in just 75 minutes of action.
The 33-year old blasted 29 winners in her victory to land her sixth Open crown and equalled fellow American greats Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova with 18 Grand Slam singles titles, the fourth-most in the history of Grand Slam leader board.
The now 18-time Grand Slam champion also matched Evert's record of six championships at the US Open and became the first woman to win three consecutive US Open championships since Evert's four-title run in 1977 to 1978.
Apart from ranking and seeding no. 1, Williams won all 14 sets and she never dropped more than three games in any of the matches she played in the tournament.
When the final match ended, Serena Williams dropped to her back behind the baseline, covered her face with her hands. In 1999, when she was 17, she also won her first major trophy in New York.
"It is a pleasure for me to win my first Grand Slam here and then this No. 18," Williams said during the US Open trophy presentation. "So I'm really emotional. I couldn't ask to do it at a better place."
In addition to her 18th Grand Slam title, Williams earned won the biggest cheque in tennis history, a hefty US$4 million and another US$1 million bonus for winning the US Open summer series.
Meanwhile, Williams also won her fans off the court for being featured at the Fashion Week, where she will make her presentation on Tuesday.
The American tennis superstar will showcase her namesake collection of more than 25 looks, some in camouflage and leopard prints on the runway. Her collection will mainly feature easy flirting, edgy and contemporary silhouettes ranging from $29.90 to $79.90 in prices.
