Sesame Street's Ernie not gay, says show spokesperson
A spokesperson for Sesame Street denied reports circulating on cyberspace that Ernie may have declared himself a homosexual with a tweet referring to his hairstyle as a "bit of mo" (which was apparently a slang for, homosexual).
Sesame Street workshop spokesperson Elen Lewis told FoxNews.com that "our writer had no intention of implying anything by the tweet, no agenda and no idea that it would be interpreted any other way except that the 'A-Team' movie was out and Bert has, like, a mini-mohawk, so her intention was just a fun way to split up the word just to imply that his hairstyle is a shorter derivative of a longer Mohawk that Mr. T in the A-team wore."
But this is not the first time that Ernie and Bert had been rumoured as a gay couple. It has been a subject in a book and Ernie's and Bert's relationship had been parodied in a short film. The puppet Ernie himself denied that he and Bert are gay in an interview, contending that he and his best friends are "just happy".
According to his bio in Sesame Street, Ernie describes himself as "wise," "playful," and "naturally outgoing. "
Ernie says: " I like to have fun, especially with my best friend Bert. I like to ask a lot of questions and I am great at explaining things, but can sometimes be a bit too smart for my own good."
"I tend to talk myself into some tight corners, and I often fall prey to my own jokes."
This time around, did Ernie tweet himself into a tight corner, and fell prey to his own joke?
