Geoscience Australia reported a 5.3 magnitude quake which occurred 270 kilometers off Exmouth at 2.41 am (WST). The said location is at the north-west coast of Western Australia.

The tremor was succeeded by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake which happened on Saturday, 60 kilometers west of Bowen in Queensland.

Seismologist Jonathan Bathgate explained that tremors in the area are common. He says furthered that the WA quake was not felt onshore as the occurrence was shallow.

"The plates are always moving but these kinds of occurences in Australia are not particularly uncommon," Bathgate said in an interview.

Tracking back history, Bathgate shared, "This one in Western Australia for example has occurred in the past; in year 2000 and again in 1970 there were similar magnitude earthquakes in this very area."
