With a heavy defeat for Flipkens and a thrashing of the No. 5 Angelique Kerber, Russian superstar players Maria Sharapova and Ekaterina Makarova are heading into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

With only five dropped games in four matches, Sharapova seemed determined to win a second Australia title for 2013.

After demolishing the Belgian player Kirsten Flipkens in an astounding 6-1, 6-0 match, ABC reported that Sharapova secured a spot in the quarter-finals. But the bid isn't set in stone, as Makarova is also looking forward to a match of a lifetime.

News.com reports that the No. 19 is all pumped up and ready for the face-off, after thrashing Kerber, a No. 5 seed, and Marion Bartoli in separate games to push herself to the quarter-finals.

While Sharapova has been dominating court after court and breezing past her opponents-the Daily Mail reported Venus Williams's utter defeat in the hands of Sharapova in the fourth round at a crushing 6-1, 6-3 only a little over an hour-but Ekaterina is just as determined to win a title this year.

"Actually I really want to play against Maria because I lost here last year in the quarters," Makarova said in an interview with ESPN. "Now I'm pretty confident and I like my game."

Makarova faced off with Sharapova last year at the Australian Open, with the latter sending the former home as the No. 2 went off to the finals, reports Newser. The face-off between the two Russian players will serve as a rematch for Makarova's defeat.

Both players have made a name for themselves at the court, but Sharapova is recently making headlines for the new man in her life, who may be the push she needed to be the fire starter and juggernaut of the Australian Open 2013.

After breaking off an engagement with basketball star Sasha Vujacic, Sharapova is now seeing fellow tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, reports The Telegraph. Fans are wondering, is this new love in her life going to be the last push needed for that second Australian title?

The battle between No. 2 and No. 19 will be decided on the court tomorrow during the first round of the quarter finals.
