Sharon Stone Avoids Court, Settles Lawsuit Against Filipino Nanny Over Multiple Charges Including Racism and Labor Violations
Filipino Worker Stands Up to What Was Right, Filed Charges to Abusive Employer in Actress, Sharon Stone
Looks like actress Sharon Stone uses her basic instinct on how to address the multiple complaints charged by her former Filipino nanny, Erlinda Elemen and decided to reach settlement to avoid heading to court.
The legal case emanated from the complaints filed by Elemen in May 2012, alleging that she was mistreated, harassed and wrongly terminated by the 55-year-old actress. The legal action was brought to court when Stone fired the 50-year-old Filipino who had served the actress and her family for three years before the fall out. Taking to court, the Filipino complained of labor violations, racism and wrongful termination against Sharon Stone.
In February 2011, Stone fired Elemen after the star allegedly discovered that Filipino nanny “was stealing” from through unwarranted overtime pays. The star reportedly blew her top when she discovered that Elemen was being overpaid for her tasks as carer for one of Stone’s children.
The “discovery” led to heated disagreement and unnecessary remarks were made by the star, including calling Elemen (and her race) “stupid people.”
Elemen accused the actress of making unnecessary and disparaging remarks and insulted her Filipino heritage, including calling her “stupid people.” The Filipino worker also claimed in her legal document that the Stardust Memories actress have been mistreating her and her religious beliefs. The complaint noted that “Sharon 'criticised Plaintiff for frequently attending church and, on one occasion, forbade Plaintiff from reading the bible in the plaintiff's room in the defendant's residence' and ordered her not to speak to her three kids Roan, Laird and Quinn because she did not want them 'to talk' like her,” according to The Daily Mail.
In defense of the Filipino worker, her lawyer, Atty Solomon Gresen, said it was baffling to have Stone earlier paid Elemen in according to the number of hours reported by the household employee to later demand return of fees.
'Because abuses in overtime pay are common for household employees it seems ironic that Ms. Stone initially did the right thing and paid Mrs. Elemen overtime wages and then terminated her for accepting those same wages,' Elemen’s lawyer, Solomon Gresen, was quoted as saying in an earlier statement by the Daily Mail.
The Filipino nanny and other Stone’s former household help have found allies in some Europeans who felt their plight.
Agatha King, Toronto Canada 08/6/2013 : “Ms Stone is like an employer from the hell. Those girls are working their butts out and still are not appreciated by many. It is sad. Good the worker got compensated and helped by the good lawyer . Justice still exist for the poor too.”
Neo2627 , Inglewood, 08/6/2013 : “Sharon, lay off the wine; and try to treat people, the way you would want to be treated by them!”
Doris , LDN, 08/6/2013 : “Adopt children because you want them, not for them to be brought up by a nanny!! And let's be honest, Sharon hasn't had any real work in years, so she's no excuses really.”
Fred , Derby, 08/6/2013 : “staff can definitely make opportunistic claims but it seems to happen a bit too often to Sharon Stone for their to be no smoke without fire. Didn't she lose custody of her adopted kid with her ex because she would allow him to get treatment for athlete's foot or some such nonsense?”
Leeb , Nottingham, United Kingdom, 08/6/2013: “I think She wanted him to have botox in his feet to stop them sweating. can't quite remember... But yeah Sharon Stone doesn't seem like a very nice person to work for or be associated with”
Elemen claimed she was fired for no reason by Stone in February 2011. It wasn’t the only time that actress Sharon Stone found herself in the middle of legal complaint against a household employee. Another maid, Angelica Castillo filed a separate complaint last month against the star for the same argument - - wrongful termination and wrongful retaliation. According the the Mail Online, Castillo filed the complaint when Stone refused to listen to the advice of the maid’s doctor to reduce her workload after getting hurt on the job.
No details have been provided as to the nature of the settlement agreed to by both parties.
