Fans of "Sherlock" got an exciting New Year's gift by the genius makers of the show Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss when Sherlock Holmes answered the very question: how he faked his own death? For years and months, fans have waited for the mystery to unfurl. There were a frenzy of speculations and contemplations running wild, for a long period of time. Sherlock Season 3: How Sherlock Faked His Death-The Theories

As fans waited for the mystery to be finally unveiled in "Sherlock" Season 3 Episode 1 "The Empty Hearse" aired on New Year's Day, there were many theories that were floating around. Some of the theories of how Sherlock Holmes faked his own death in "The Reichenbach Fall" where he took the deadly plunge were as follows:

One of the popular theories developed was "rubbish truck theory." According to which the rubbish truck parked outside the St. Bart's Hospital's building cushioned Sherlock Holmes' fall. According to the "mask theory" Sherlock Holmes used villain Moriarty's body as a disguise for himself which was masked. And it was Moriarty's body that was pushed from the building and not his.

Some other theories of how Sherlock Holmes cheated death involved Molly who has a sweet corner for Sherlock and his brother Mycroft. More well pondered theories include a "medicine theory," "cyclist theory" and "rubber ball theory."

Sherlock Season 3 Episode 1 The Empty Hearse: How Sherlock Faked His Death- Sherlock Holmes Explanation/ The Answer [Spoilers]

In the most anticipated segment of "Sherlock" Season 3 Episode 1 "The Empty Hearse," detective Sherlock Holmes explains how he faked his own death. As promised by Benedict Cumberbatch, the solution to the riddle will be worth a wait and fans won't be disappointed.

The genius plan did involve Molly and Mycroft to fake his death. Sherlock Holmes' accomplice John Watson failed to notice some important props around the St. Bart's building as he was instructed to stay in a place which prevented him from seeing what was actually happening. Mycroft placed a mat in front of the building that would cushion Sherlock's jump and keep him unharmed.

In the meantime, Molly pushed a dead body out of the window of the building which was swapped with the assistance of Mycroft's or hospital's people when John Watson was knocked by a cyclist on the road. Sherlock Holmes swiftly took the place covered in injuries and blood.

By the time, John Watson reached his dead friend (as made to appear) he was surrounded by a crowd including people who actually helped him in switch bodies in order to make the scene look more real. To fake hhis death and skip pulses, he placed a rubber ball under his armpit which stopped his pulse momentarily. And that is how Sherlock Holmes faked his death in Sherlock Season 2 Episode 3 "The Reichenbach Fall" as explained by Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock Season 3 Episode 1 The Empty Hearse.
