Should Parents Bring Young Babies to Posh Restaurants? Netizens Divided Over Alinea Crying Baby Incident
On Jan 12, a couple dined at Alinea, a fine-dining establishment in Chicago with three Michelin stars. They had their 8-month-old with them. As is habitual with kids, the baby had a crying bout inside the restaurant, subjecting other diners to the noise, fuss and all. Chef Grant Achatz, Alinea owner, wasn't happy. Though he didn't bolt the trio out of his restaurant, his rant on Twitter created the same noise, if not much more, than the crying baby.
Confused and pissed, Mr Achatz wrote on his Twitter account:
Tbl brings 8mo.Old. It cries. Diners mad. Tell ppl no kids? Subject diners 2crying? Ppl take infants 2 plays? Concerts? Hate saying no,but..

Netizens were divided on Mr Achatz' plan to ban babies from his restaurant.
"If a child can behave appropriately (sit, talk & eat quietly for as long as the family is eating, etc.), then fine. If not, no. If the parents are experimenting to see if the child can manage it, if the child can't, the family must leave. It is rude & self-centered to expect others to deal w/your children's inappropriate (to the setting) behavior," azure15 wrote on OregonLive.
"I wouldn't bring my 8-month-old or an 8-year-old to a high-end restaurant like Alinea, but that doesn't mean there should be a ban against babies or children. The ban should be on parents that don't know how to use their good judgment or common sense in these situations," Nadia Jones, a mommy blogger and founder of the Niche Parent Network and Conference, told HLN on Tuesday.
Mr Achatz told Good Morning America that on that fateful Saturday evening, he could hear the baby's crying way from inside the kitchen. "We want people to come and enjoy and experience Alinea for what it is. But we also have to be cognizant of the other 80 people that came in to experience Alinea that night."
After all, prices at Alinea aren't cheap. The upscale restaurant in Lincoln Park charges between $210 and $265 per diner, excluding drinks.
Some netizens blasted the baby's parents for after all, they were the ones who caused the commotion to rise to themselves.
Twitter user @suchitavad said surely the baby's parents can afford to have hired a babysitter if they can afford the rather expensive tab at Alinea.
User @djmont, a parent himself, said, ""An 8mo baby doesn't belong in a fine dining restaurant. I have 2 little kids, so I know! :)"
Bottomline, it really all boils down to social niceties and consideration of other people's interests.
@Gachatz I don't know how you take an 8 mo old to alinea and not step out if s/he cries. Selfish. You take crying kid outside. Period.
