Possible offline SimCity gaming?

Whether it's a response to a simple query, a plea from long-time SimCity gamers, or a massive outrage from the recent disaster of the latest SimCity launch, Electronic Arts' answer remains the same: offline gaming is just not in the works nor is it possible.

However, according to Rock Paper Shotgun, it seems that a Maxis insider has spilled the beans on the elephant in the room: offline gaming is possible-if you know how to do it.

For the longest time, the necessity for always-on DRM was backed by the fact that calculations are done and offloaded to the servers. But this fact has been overturned.

"The servers are not handling any of the computation done to simulate the city you are playing," the anonymous tip had said. "They are still acting as servers, doing some amount of computation to route messages of various types between players and cities. But for the game itself? No, they're not doing anything."

Since then, bloggers have tried to run tests on whether they can actually play the game without an Internet connection. Kotaku writer Stephen Totilo even claimed that the game ran for approximately 20 minutes offline, allowing him to create roads and even get a notification from a neighboring city.

What happened with those offline minutes of gameplay showed that offline gaming is possible-but of course, consequences of what had occurred during the time that the game weren't connected to the servers can't be confirmed.

What it does, reports Kotaku, is to show that SimCity offline gaming is not impossible-but may require more work to become a reality.
