Simple Ways to Cut the Tension and Destress at Work
If taking deep breaths, squeezing stress balls, counting to 10 or taking walks were all it took, we wouldn't have a whole month dedicated to stress awareness (it's April)! You're an exception if you are never stressed at work (come on!). Constant burden of added pressure, threat of layoffs and a boss from hell can drive you crazy! Too much of it can shoot up your heart rate and anxiety level. But there are a few unorthodox ideas that might bring some relief to an otherwise stressful day at work. No matter what's going on at work, these simple ways to destress will help you stay composed before, during and after the storm.
Stretch and Move
For those of you who have a sedentary job, stretching and moving about once in a while is especially important. When you sit for hours on end, you increase the risk of having blood clots. So, while sitting at your desk or table, try doing an exercise such as lifting and stretching your legs for half a minute every couple of hours. Stretch your arms and flex your fingers too. Every 1-2 hours get up and walk around in the office. You have several excuses to do so, such as getting water, running errands, making copies or walking to another office.
Incorporate Music in Your Routine
Music can do wonders to your mood. It can make an otherwise ordinary day seem much better. Try to keep some of your favourite music in your computer or laptop or carry an iPod/portable music player to work. Use a headset so you won't interrupt anyone's work. Listening to some calm music during the day can lift your mood tremendously.
Eat Right
Eating heavy meals is not going to do you any good if your job involves sitting in a chair for long hours. To avoid irritability and laziness, it's important to keep your blood sugar level in check which, in turn, will keep you energized throughout the day. Try to eat small meals every few hours. Pick healthy snacks that are baked or roasted instead of fried. Have as many fruits as you can. That'll fill you up and you won't have to worry about calories. It's a great option to keep some nuts, protein bars, dried fruit, crackers or pretzels to nibble on whenever you want.
Take Care of Your Eyes
Don't stare at your computer screen or paperwork for too long. It'll wear you out and tire your eyes making your head feel heavy. Place some photographs, some artwork, interesting decoration or small plants near your desk. Every once in a while, look up and give your eyes, and your mind, a break from the screen. Create some visual relief by adding exciting objects like a photo calendar, a motivating quote or a collage that carries pictures of your friends or childhood.
Go Out For Lunch
Step out of the office and meet a friend for a quick bite. A change of place and scenery will freshen you up. Talking to friends will surely make you feel better. Eat something light and healthy. Avoid alcohol so you don't get back to work feeling heavy and sluggish.
Drink Up
It's important to stay hydrated, so make sure to keep a bottle filled with water all day long, at your desk at all times. Develop the habit of sipping some water every now and then. Aside from keeping you hydrated, it's a fantastic and healthy option compared to aerated drinks, sodas, etc.
Try these simple ways to keep yourself calm, energised and focussed throughout the day. Take care of yourself. Cut your stress before it develops into something you will have to worry about!
