"Sleepy Hollow" is the new mystery-adventure drama on Fox. The first episode of "Sleepy Hollow" established all the principal characters and the rules of the fictional 'Village of Sleepy Hollow'. The second episode of "Sleepy Hollow," "Blood Moon," unfolds according to the same set rules -- so nothing is wacky or bizarre though it takes a while to digest all the wacky talks and the witch tales.

The opening scene of the second episode of "Sleepy Hollow," "Blood Moon," is that of Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) running in the spooky, dark, misty forest and the headless horse-rider chasing him, with an axe in his hand. Wait, it is not just the headless horse-rider, but along with him are the other three Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The root tentacles of a tree pull Mr Crane underground and Katrina (Katia Winter), his good witch wife, appears again, saying "you're safe here for now" and reminds him about the larger purpose. According to Mr Crane, it is the stop for the four horse-men. Katrina corrects him by saying, "conquest all famine and death" and talks about the head that Mr Crane chopped-off more than two centuries, ago.

"He has now returned to gather the others. Together, they'll unleash apocalypse," Katrina tells Mr Crane. And, she also informs him that before the three other horsemen come, evil forces will arrive to welcome them. "The first dark spirit arises with the "Blood Moon." She is one of us," Katrina forewarns. "You must stop her before she kills, again."

A startled Mr Crane wakes-up in his bed. The opening chase scene is a nightmare of Mr Crane. He opens the door of his room to visit Abbie (Nicole Beharie) and have a talk with her, but is stopped by a policeman keeping a watch on him.

Abbie is having a talk with Captain Frank Irving (Orlando Jones) who still does not want to make it official about the headless horse-rider. He informs Abbie that the two officers who witnessed the headless horse-rider recanted. Also, as per the video recording, Andy Dunn's (John Cho) death happened because he hit his head on the mirror and as a result his head snapped back. It was not a ghoul coming out of the mirror and snapping his head back. The resident time-traveller, Mr Crane, suffers from a disorder called "objective transference," Captain Irving tells Abbie, and that since he cannot explain the bizarre events and in the absence of options, Abbie and Crane are his only choice.

The resident time-traveller, confined to his room, is trying to adjust to the new century and turning on the new world amenities such as a coffee machine, a shower, T.V. When Abbie finally visits him, a furious Mr Crane tells her, "this is unacceptable" and "I'm not going to be held prisoner here."

Mr Crane tells Abbie that he received a warning in the night from his wife Katrina, and that the "first dark spirit awaits entry into your world."

"If Katrina warning is true, evil has found a new home in "Sleepy Hollow," he warns Abbie after she expresses her disbelief and questions the veracity of the information. Abbie also tells him that she wants to keep her sanity and not lose her job.

The dead Andy Dunn wakes-up in a room of a hospital, with his head snapped back; and which is corrected by the same mirror ghoul who snapped it back. Andy pulls out a medallion from his mouth and asks the ghoul (who is instructing something in a gibberish language) : "release who?" It is the witch that the ghoul is talking about and the medallion is hers.

Abbie takes Mr Crane to the office. Mr Crane tells her that when he and his wife met, she disliked him intensely and refuses to divulge more details. He is shocked to find out his meal cost $4 and 95 cents, and with an additional tax of 41 cents. Abbie thinks that his shock is a topic changing tactic and that he fell in love with Katrina, got married and never had a clue that his wife was a witch. Mr Crane thinks that his wife hid the truth to save him, herself -- as witch killing was the norm in 1770s --- and probably the whole country. He also expresses his outrage over tax on baked goods and wonders why the people are not protesting on the streets.

Andy meets the witch to help her find the people that she is looking for. The ashes of the people will ordain the witch's resurrection. "Take the flesh and you can reclaim yours," Andy tells the charred witch.

Later, Andy stops a car and asks the man driving it his full name. "Jeremy Steven Firth," the man replies. Jeremy is unable to start his car after Andy leaves, telling him that nothing was personal. The witch perches on the hood of the car and burns the car down.

Mr Crane explains to Abbie that witches are known to gain power from the lunar cycle. Abbie and Mr Crane visit the site where the witch roasted Jeremy alive in his car. They find the completely charred body and according to Mr Crane, it looks like someone purposely dunk into his chest. "It's like someone collected something."

"I believe I know who did this," Mr Crane tells Abbie.

He tells her about the witch he saw on a blood moon night when his regiment had returned to the camp from the battle-field. Mr Crane tells about the destruction and bodies, everywhere. He tells Abbie about the presence he felt and what he saw, which chilled his blood, like nothing before.

Abbie tells him that Sheriff August Corbin (Clancy Brown) believed that there were two groups of witches in Sleepy Hollow, one good and one evil. They go to the office to look into the files that the late Sheriff had kept locked in his cabinet. But, the cabinet and the files are no longer there. They are in the archive section, which is on the other side of the street. Mr Crane breaks down a wall to find the passage connecting to the archive room.

They find the details about the witch and that she was captured at the time and burned. The witch had declared, "By the turn of the blood moon, the ashes of your ancestry would be mine. Your flesh would be my flesh. I would live, again." The name of the magistrate who sentenced the witch was Robert Daniel Firth, the ancestor of the man who was charred to death in his car.

"She requires the ashes of his (magistrate) descendants to return to life," Mr Crane says. "She must complete her resurrection by the turn of the blood moon. That is tonight. We must find whom she kills next."

The witch comes to take the descendant's little boy but leaves him behind -- -- as the boy is adopted -- and takes with her his father's ash urn, the last of the descendant.

There is very little time left for Mr Crane and Abbie to stop the witch from coming to life. The witch does come to life using the ashes that she has collected; however, Mr Crane's quick thinking stops her from becoming the force of evil out to destroy Sleepy Hollow. A blaze consumes her and she disappears.
