Sloane Stephens Schooled by Serena Williams
Serena Williams showed Sloane Stephens who the boss is at the U.S. Open, putting the challenger at her place with a 6-4 and 6-1 win. Sloane was a fan of Serena Williams before they became fierce rivals.
While Sloane Stephens showed some raw and pure tennis talent, Serena is considered the top tennis player in the world for a reason. One of these reasons is that it would take a lot to actually beat her at her own game. Sloane Stephens might be destined for greatness, but this time is still Serena's time.
Sloane admitted this without being a sore thumb. "Obviously she's No. 1 in the world for a reason," Stephens said. "I thought she played really well. It didn't go how I wanted. All in all I competed well and played well. That's all you can do, really."
Sloane did not do that badly. In fact, she has become a worthy opponent of Serena Williams, the drama between them sometimes too overwhelming to watch because of its intensity. However, the Sunday's game showed why Serena Williams is in her current position, adored by tennis fans and players everywhere.
The match between them on Sunday started with crackling good rallies and stunning athleticism on both sides but started to turn as ugly as the intensity grew.
Stephens, however, remained optimistic and positive. "It's an honor to be able to play on the court with one of the greatest players of all time," Stephens said. "I think she had some bomb first serves," Stephens said. "I lost serve. That kind of threw me off. But I think having Serena serve at 3-1 up in the second is not ideal. I think when you give her that opportunity to take that step forward, she definitely makes her move."
Williams also have good things to say on her opponent. "The quality of tennis was great. Sloane's a great player. It definitely had feelings of more a quarterfinal or semifinal match," Williams said.
Stephens is definitely tennis fans have to keep an eye on.
