‘SNL’ Spoofs ‘I'm Just A Bill’; ‘Capitol Hill Cold Open - Saturday Night Live’ Goes Viral
NBC’s late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show “Saturday Night Live” has commented on United States President Barack Obama’s immigration reform by spoofing a segment of the 1975 educational program “Schoolhouse Rock!” titled “I’m Just A Bill.”
The parody video titled “Capitol Hill Cold Open – Saturday Night Live” was published on YouTube on Nov. 23 and has since been viewed more than three million times. In the video, Keenan Thompson plays the song written by Dave Frishberg and originally performed by Jack Sheldon. Thompson then explains he is an immigration bill that “one day might become a law.”
Obama played by Jay Pharaoh then shows up and shoves Bill down the Capital Hill steps. The Executive Order played by Bobby Moynihan walks in a new part of the kids' segment. Also, Obama refers to the Executive Order as an “easier way to get things done around here.”
“I'm an executive order, and I pretty much just happen. And that's it. I'll create a national park, or a new holiday,” the Executive Order says. Having no idea he is granting “legal status” to five million immigrants, he also says, “Oh my god, I didn't have time to read myself!”
On the other hand, it must be noted that the way “Capitol Hill Cold Open – Saturday Night Live” portrayed the executive action is not entirely accurate as there is no “legal status” offered to beneficiaries.
