Solomon Burke, Legendary King of Rock and Soul, dies at 70.
Solomon Burke died early Sunday at Amsterdam's Schipol Airport. He was 70. His family did not elaborate on the snger's cause of death, but reports say he died of natural causes.
Burke's best-known songs were featured in hit movies. "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" was later featured in the John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd movie "The Blues Brothers." The song was also recorded by the The Rolling Stones and Wilson Pickett. "Cry To Me" was one of the soundtrack of "Dirty Dancing" where in one of the film's most memorable scene Patrick Swayze seductively danced with Jennifer Grey.
In a statement posted in the singer's website, Burke's family said:
"This is a time of great sorrow for our entire family. We truly appreciate all of the support and well wishes from his friends and fans."
"Although our hearts and lives will never be the same, his love, life and music will continue to live within us forever."
Schiphol Airport police confirmed that Burke died on a plane at Schiphol. He arrived early Sunday from Los Angeles and was suppose to perform in show on Tuesday in Amsterdam with local band De Dijk.
