‘Sons of Anarchy’ spin-off script development in full force; Kurt Sutter has tremendous faith in Latino filmmaker Elgin James
“Sons of Anarchy” spin-off, “Mayans MC” is officially in script development mode at FX and it may air sooner than expected. Show creator Kurt Sutter has roped in Latino filmmaker Elgin James to get help launching the new series. FX and Sutter are looking to recapture the massive audience that “Sons of Anarchy” had. Thus, the spin-off is not a rumour any longer but a reality.
Sutter and James will be focusing exclusive on the Mayans, the Latino motorcycle club that had a “sometime rival, sometime ally” relationship with Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original (SAMCRO) and Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam). With James as co-creator of the spin-off, he is writing a plot that will be “dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.”
When asked why Sutter roped in James for the spin-off, he said that he did not want “a white guy from Jersey” to be writing about Latin traditions and culture. He believes James is the right person for the job.
The final season of “Sons of Anarchy” saw a huge jump in ratings for FX as 9.26 million viewers tuned in to watch Jax Teller’s final ride, Variety reported back in December 2014. Sutter has not disclosed anything on the time period of the new series. However, there is a possibility for Sutter and James to go the prequel way and include cameos by original cast members. In case “Mayans MC” is set in the future, the showrunners may include a whole generation of Tellers to join the mayhem.
Moreover, fans are contemplating that Jimmy Smits’s character, Nero Padilla, may also find a place in the new series. In Season 6 of “Sons of Anarchy,” Padilla founded Byz Lats, another Latino gang and was a cautious ally of the Mayans.
