HTC recently announced the upcoming release of the HTC J Butterfly, with the first stop in Japan and then to the entire global market. Sony will also release a version of another Xperia in Japan and then to rest of the world. While both are still coming soon to retail outlets, these upcoming devices are already set to face off each other.

Sony Xperia VL

The body dimension is 129 x 65 x 10.7mm, weighs 120g, and made resilient from dust and water, and is IP57 certified. Its body can proof water up to 1 meter under 30 minutes.

Its display size has TFT capacitive touchscreen, 720x 1280 pixels, 4.3 inches with 342 ppi pixel density. The screen can recognise up to 10 fingers and has scratch-resistant glass. As usual, Sony Xperia had built-in the BRAVIA engine 2 on it, including this one, with Timescape UI.

Sony Xperia VL is powered by Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich and upgradeable to 4.1. It has Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with Dual-core 1.5GHz processor backed up by Adreno 225. It has 8GB internal storage and can be expanded up to 32Gb via microSD card slot managed by 1GB of RAM.

Sony Xperia VL has 13MP camera with 4128x3096 pixel resolution, autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama, and image stabilizer. It records video of 1080p@30fps with continuous autofocus, video light and video stabiliser. Xperia VL has also a secondary camera with VGA resolution.

HTC J Butterfly

This device has a dimension of 143 x 71 x 9.1mm and weighs 140g. It has 5.0 inch Super LCD 3 screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with an impressive 440 ppi pixel density. Its body is protected from dust and is water proof (IPX5).

HTC J Butterfly will run Android 4.1 or JellyBean, has quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM. It will have 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded using the microSD card slot.

On the back is an 8MP camera with 1080p video recording and on the front is a 2MP camera. Like the HTC J, J Butterfly's camera has autofocus, LED Flash, touch focus, geo-tagging, image and video stabiliser, and face detection.

The HTC J Butterfly is set to release in Japan in December and still welcomes changes to its specifications. HTC is apparently hoping that the sale of the Butterfly would boost its overall sales which slumped by 48 per cent year-on-year in September 2012 .

Unwired.view.com has warned HTC that "One or two more quarters like this and HTC will join the crowd of money-losing Android smartphone makers like Motorola, LG and Sony."
