The Country Fire Service as well as other emergency services have warned residents in South Australia to prepare for what could be a fire disaster on Thursday after authorities said extreme and severe fire dangers loom across the state.

"We're expecting 40C temperatures and strong northerly winds that will be with us for most of the day," Leigh Miller, Country Fire Service manager of prevention services, said.

"We've seen in conditions like this, in NSW and Tasmania recently, that hundreds of houses have been lost, so this is a very serious fire danger day."

"We recommend that people review their bushfire action plans tomorrow."

Extreme fire danger has been put in place for the West Coast, the Lower Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, the Mount Lofty Ranges and Lower South East.

The North West Pastoral, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Flinders Ranges, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands and the Upper South East, meanwhile, have been issued severe ratings.

The North East Pastoral District and the Adelaide Metropolitan Area have been warned of a very high fire danger rating.

"These types of conditions mean that people's houses, unless they're properly prepared, are venerable to bushfire," Mr Miller said.

"If people aren't convinced that their house is a place of shelter in these conditions they should consider relocating early to a safer place."

Authorities have placed total fire bans all across the state, except for the Adelaide Metropolitan area and the north-east pastoral district.

The Metropolitan Fire Service likewise urged on residents to be careful when using barbecues, power tools or running air conditioners.

"We have had several fires this year as a result of overheating airconditioners, so we would ask people to be aware of faulty equipment," Glenn Benham, assistant chief fire officer, said.
