South Australian Man Caught Driving Without Steering Wheel
A South Australian driver has been remanded in custody after being caught driving a car without a steering wheel.
The driver was initially pulled over by police after they observed his white Holden driving dangerously on two blown tyres.
When police stopped the car they noticed a pair of vice grips had been attached where the car's steering wheel had (presumably) once been.
Further investigations revealed the car was unregistered and uninsured, and had already been subject to a defect notice not to be driven on the road.
The car had been involved in a hit and run incident minutes before being pulled over. No one was injured.
The driver, a 38-year-old man from the Adelaide suburb of Northfield, was driving while disqualified and returned a positive drug test to methyl amphetamine and cannabis.
He will appear in court today, charged with a series of offences including driving without due care, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, driving in a dangerous manner, driving whilst disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle, driving contrary to a defect notice and breaching his bail conditions.
If convicted, the driver may not find himself too far from home, with Adelaide's main male prison also located in Northfield.
