Residential dwellers near south of Brisbane have complained complained a hazardous waste incinerator near their homes.

The facility is operated by waste management firm Ace Water and monitored by the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM).

The incinerator is utilized to discard medical and chemical pollutants that can cause cancer when people are exposed to high concentrations.

Mayor Campbell Newman said the State Government already addressed the issue to the Brisbane City Council in February, saying that there should be a one-kilometer buffer between the facility and new developments.

However, a dozen of homes and business firms are already residing within the perimeter.

Mayor Newman have called on the State Government to intervene and conduct a comprehensive air monitoring.

“People who live around that area need to know that these questions are being raised,” he said.

"They also need to make sure they commit to proper monitoring of the facility to ensure that in the future all residents - and indeed business people and employees - who work around those areas can be confident that there isn't any health or safety issue."

Meanwhile, the assistant director general of DERM said the waste company has cooperated with strict conditions and there has been no health risks involved so far.
