Spider-Man reboot set to feature Zooey Deschanel as Betty Brant
Zooey Deschanel ((500) Days of Summer) may soon star in the upcoming Spider-Man film and possibly may play as the love interest of Peter Parker, to be played by Andrew Garfield (Never Let Me Go, The Social Network).
Showbiz Spy reported that Deschanel is in talks with producers of the Spider-Man reboot. Sources, quoted by the Web site, said the director Marc Webber wants Zooey to play Betty Brant, a staff at the Daily Bugle, woking under chief editor J. Jonah Jameson. Betty Brant was previously played by Elizabeth Banks (Scrubs) in the Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy.
The source said: "Betty was a minor character in the previous Spidey movies but Marc has big plans for her."
"He wants a strong performer to carry the role and Zooey fits the bill perfectly. The role is hers if she wants it."
In the comic series, Betty Brant and Peter Parker were attracted to each other, with Betty seeing in Peter, the normal and ordinary man she yearns for. However, Betty's brother was accidentally killed during a fight with Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, for which she blamed Spider-Man.
She later forgave Spider-Man after realizing that the super hero was trying to protect them.
In the Sam Raimi films, the romance between Betty Brant and Peter Parker was never fully explored as the focus throughout the trilogy was on the relationship between Peter Parker and Mary Jane.
Zooey Deschanel first worked with Marc Webber in (500) Days of Summer, where she played the titular character opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
