'Spider-man's' Andrew Garfield VS Tobey Maguire: Who Swings Better?
It's Tobey Maguire vs. Andrew Garfield. Parker vs. Parker. Who plays our favourite web-slinging hero better?
It's always tricky business to make a sequel for a massively successful film. It's even trickier to reboot or create a remake for a very successful franchise.
In recent years, Hollywood producers have taken bigger risks by replacing major actors in sequels and remaking highly successful films only a few years apart. One such controversy involved the replacement of Megan Fox as Shia LaBeouf's love interest in the last "Transformers" film. This is nothing though compared to the complete overhaul done for "Spider-man".
While Tobey Maguire's "Spider-man" proved to be highly successful, in a bizarre move prompted by creative differences, Sony Pictures decided to give the franchise a complete overhaul. The actors were all changed with Andrew Garfield taking on the lead role.
Instead of continuing the story where they left off in the trilogy directed by Sam Raimi, the studio decided to start from scratch and re-tell the "Spider-man" story and even changing Parker's love interest from Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) to Gwen Stacy now played by Emma Stone whose character also appeared in the original three films in a bit part. Marc Webb spins his web well and is handed the task of directing the new films.
Everyone has their own preference. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone's off screen romance seems to be helping the popularity of their tandem but who really takes the cake? For the purposes of this comparison, only the data from the performances of only the first two films in Tobey Maguire's trilogy will be included. Here are the figures:
MOVIE TITLE | RELEASE DATE | OPENING REVENUE | LIFETIME GROSS |
Spider-man | May 3, 2002 | $114,844,116 | $403,70,375 |
Spider-man 2 | June 30,2004 | $88,156,227 | $373,585,825 |
The Amazing Spider-man | July 3, 2012 | $62,004,688 | $262,030,663 |
The Amazing Spider-man 2 | May 2, 2014 | $91,608,337 | $96,776,618 |
The numbers are out folks and it looks like at this point, Tobey Maguire takes the cake. Opening figures for "Spider-man" raked in almost twice as much as Andrew Garfield's first outing. However, an interesting trend to note is that while Maguire's sequel performed well in the box office, it was not able to top the first film.
Andrew Garfield's first film did not do as well as Maguire's first outing despite the already strong following of the franchise. However, audiences quickly warmed up to Garfield's "The Amazing Spider-man" series with the opening day revenues for the second film exceeding the first and Tobey Maguire's second film as well.
The Amazing Spider-man still has a lot of ground to cover to catch up but rising trends look promising. More box office information can be found at Box Office Mojo to see how "The Amazing Spider-man 2" performs beyond opening weekend.
