Spike Lee's Oldboy Released; Korean Cult Hit Remake Stars Josh Brolin (TRAILER)
The red band trailer of director Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy, a Korean cult hit, has been unveiled. Josh Brolin leads the mystery thriller film who will find and make his revenge against the person who held him in solitary confinement for twenty years.
With the look of the trailer, it seems that Lee did his best to stick to the original concept, but of course, fans should not put all their expectations on it considering that the film will have to adapt to Western culture and how Lee have envisioned the remake. By now, you should have already learned how most Hollywood remakes fail to satisfy the audience.
However, Lee's Oldboy looks promising. The violence featured in the trailer could level the original's shocking scenes.
Before Lee was finally introduced by the producers to direct Oldboy, the film was attached to several directors such as Steven Spielberg and Justin Lin, director of The Fast and the Furious franchise. Will Smith, Colin Firth, Clive Owen and Christian Bale were also said to be part of the project.
Lee responded to fans angered by the choice of actors to play in the remake. "People You Need To Relax. The Cast Of OLD BOY Will Be Diverse. If You Think Otherwise You Do Not Know My Work.Bother Other Directors 'Bout Dat," he tweeted.
Brolin, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, Samuel L. Jackson and Nate Parker are now the official cast of Oldboy.
The original Korean version was directed by Park Chan Wook in 2003, based on the Japanese manga with the same name. It won the Grand Prix award in the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
Aussie fans can catch Olboy in theatres on October 18.
