Teen star Selena Gomez is poised to conquer mainstream Hollywood with a starring role in "Spring Breakers".

Gomez, 19, is ready to break away from the family-friendly Disney material she is known for to appear in a darker, more adult flick.

"Spring Breakers" will focus on a group of college students who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break. When they're bailed out of jail by a drug and arms dealer, they are quickly sucked into a world more sinister than they realize.

The former Disney actress will co-star with fellow starlets Emma Roberts and Vanessa Hudgens. James Franco is also signed on to play the dealer who bails the girls out - for a price.

It will be directed by critically acclaimed Harmony Korine, who's known for films such as "Kids," "Gummo" and "Julien Donkey-Boy."

Seeing avant-garde Korine, with his often disturbing storylines, work with the wholesome Gomez will be interesting, but the young actress is certainly up to the challenge.

"I'm really, really excited about it," Gomez tells MTV News.

"It's a different character than I have ever played before. It's a different kind of vibe I think than people are used to seeing me in. What you're going to see is more raw, I think. It's going to be raw and more about acting," she adds.

This new project is slated to start filming on 2012, making next year just as promising as 2011 for Gomez.

This year has seen the young actress with a thriving career and personal life, with her superstar boyfriend Justin Bieber, a large-scale movie, "Monte Carlo," and her new album, "When the Sun Goes Down".

"I feel like this approach of this year, I wasn't expecting any of the things that happened. And so I just kind of want to go into the end of this year and the beginning of next year just excited and in a good place and not planning anything," Gomez reflects on the year to MTV News.
