Stan Van Gundy Earmarks Detroit Pistons Gig As His Last
Detroit Pistons President of basketball operations and head coach Stan Van Gundy reveals that his current stint with the Motor City will be his final pit stop in his coaching career. The former Miami Heat and Orlando Magic head mentor explains that his pre-determined mindset is mainly due to a promise made to his wife, Kim that they will no longer relocate and pursue a job with another organization when his contract expires in 2019.
"I promised my wife," Van Gundy told Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel. "I wanted one more shot at it. I've got a great owner. I've got a great situation with great tradition, and I should be able to get it turned around in the time that he's given me. If I don't, I don't. But I should be able to. But this'll be the last one."
Nevertheless, the man who guided the Magic to just its second NBA Finals stint in 2009, cleared that he is open to staying with the Pistons beyond his contract duration. He also mentioned that when he was handed the reins with the club in Florida which featured big man Dwight Howard, his assumption was that he would retire with the organization. As history dictated, the relationship between Howard and the van Gundy soured and the team was supposed to rebuild.
Van Gundy is now guiding a new rebuilding plan in the Pistons who are mired in seasons of disarray after capturing an NBA championship in 2004 through an unconventional roster that featured a couple of good parts not needing a superstar. The 55-year-old coach is hoping to transform the current roster by developing young big prospects such as Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe.
He recently jettisoned former player Josh Smith to the waiver wire and the addition by subtraction is proving to be a wise choice. The team is on a two-game streak and has impressively dispatched the Cleveland Cavaliers by 23 points in their home turf. Still, van Gundy who signed a 5-year $35 million agreement to become both player and coach, still has a lot of work to do if he is to resurrect the Pistons from the doldrums.
