‘Star Wars’ Creator George Lucas Marries Mellody Hobson In Intimate Ceremony
George Lucas has married his long-time girlfriend Mellody Hobson on Saturday in a ceremony that was largely kept out of the media but attended by their friends and family. The 69-year-old "Star Wars" visionary and the Ariel Investments company president tied the knot before an intimate gathering at a Californian ranch.
Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington was in attendance at the wedding, reported that journalist Bill Moyers officiated the wedding at the Skywalker Ranch in Marin County at 5 p.m.
"It only takes one person to have met the love of your life," Moyers told the couple, quoting 13th century Persian poet Rumi later on, saying, "When I heard my first love story, I was thinking of you."
Moyers was a Baptist minister before carving a successful career in journalism.
Lucas' fellow Hollywood bigwig and frequent collaborator, Steven Spielberg, gave the toast from the groom's side, while Hobson's colleague at the company, John W. Rogers, gave the toast on behalf of the bride. Ex-senator from New Jersey, Bill Bradley, gave away the bride, who wore an off-shoulder gown with intricately beaded bodice designed by Peter Soronen.
Spielberg, who created "Indiana Jones" saga with Lucas, also jokingly said that Lucas' famous "The Force" finally had a name: Mellody.
"Apocalypse Now" director Francis Ford Coppola read a poem by Maya Angelou.
Van Morrison and Janelle Monae entertained the couple and the guests with their performance at the reception.
Hobson, 44, will also be wearing another Peter Soronen design for their post-wedding party in Chicago this coming weekend.
Lucas and Hobson began dating in 2006. It's a second wedding for him, who was first married to film editor Marcia Lou Griffin from 1969 to 1983, while it's a first for her.
