‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens' deleted scenes shows Maz Kanata's powers
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams had previously confirmed in a previous interview that the DVD/Blu-ray version of the film will include deleted scenes. The release of the home video version doesn’t come until five months from now so fans have yet to know what these deleted scenes are. However, the VFX crew for the movie recently revealed one interesting scene for Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata that was removed. This scene showed the alien having Jedi-like powers.
Collider sat down in an interview with Neal Scanlon, Patrick Tubach and Chris Corbould to talk about the deleted scenes in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Corbould mentioned Maz Kanata’s underground scene during the Stormtrooper's attack, when asked if they have seen some of these additional scenes in the DVD/Blu-ray version.
“There was a particular part of a scene that never made it, where they go underneath the castle and they’re going into the underground passageways, and stormtroopers are coming down the stairs and Maz uses her powers to collapse the ceiling,” he said.
Corbould said Maz Kanata’s scene was something that he felt really proud to work on, because it showed all the main casts in one scene.
“From my point of view, [that] worked absolutely brilliantly because you had all the main actors running up and then Maz does her bit and then the whole ceiling collapses in front of them, but that never made it,” Corbould further revealed to Collider.
According to Heroic Hollywood, Maz Kanata showing this type of power suggests that she has learned the ways of the Force. Her line in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” wherein she says,” “I am no Jedi, but I do know the Force” further supports this belief.
In the same interview with Collider, Tubach also added another exciting scene that was eventually deleted in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” There was a speeder chase scene that reportedly included the Rathtars. This speeder chase scene reportedly still goes through different locations compared to what was seen in the film. Tubach told Collider that this scene included some cool shots and stunts. However, it was eventually cut supposedly because of the pacing.
