‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens': More details on Andy Serkis' General Snoke
Andy Serkis had revealed in a previous interview that when filming for General Snoke in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” he had to stand on a 25-foot podium so he would tower over Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) and Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux). He didn’t reveal just how tall his character is. However, Neal Scanlan, the head of creature and droid effects on the film, revealed further details about the villain’s physical appearance.
Scanlan said in an interview with People that he was involved in the production side of General Snoke in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Without providing spoilers, he revealed a few details about the character’s physical appearance and explained why General Snoke had to be created through CGI.
“This character is much better executed as a CGI character. That's just a practical reality when he's 7-foot-something tall,” he said, adding that Serkis’ character is also “very, very thin.”
Scanlan only confirmed what Serkis had also said about General Snoke in a previous interview with Collider. The actor revealed that General Snoke is large and appears very tall. No amount of makeup and costume could reportedly create the character. So he was best filmed through CGI.
“Just the facial design – you couldn’t have gotten there with prosthetics. It’s too extreme. Without giving too much away at this point, he has a very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure,” Serkis said.
Just like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), fans are yet to see General Snoke for themselves on screen. The villain was not featured in any of the trailers and TV spots released for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Serkis’ interviews, his photo showing him dressed in motion capture suit and his voiceover in the first official trailer are so far the only indications that he is involved in the movie.
According to Making Star Wars, the new issue of People promises to reveal more details and possibly character or set photos of General Snoke. The magazine hits newsstands on Wednesday.
Perhaps Serkis’ General Snoke will also make a last-minute appearance in new TV spots or featurette for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The J.J. Abrams’ film opens in the US on Dec. 18.
