‘Star Wars’ Obi Wan Kenobi Spin-Off Movie In The Works, 'Rebels' As Introduction
Obi-Wan Kenobi, from the "Star Wars" trilogy, will reportedly have his own spinoff movie although LucasFilm and Disney have yet to make this announcement official.
MakingStarWars.net claims Disney and LucasFilm are currently developing an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off movie. A source referred to the site as "Ewok Massacre" claimed he/she has "heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works."
LucasFilm and Disney allegedly initially wanted to stay away from any Sith or Jedi characters for a spin-off movie. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi's popularity had supposedly convinced an art team to start working with a writer in creating concepts for the character's film.
Obi-Wan Kenobi was voted as the most popular "Star Wars" character according to the "This Is Madness: The Star Wars Character Tournament" posted by Star Wars on its official Web site. He beats other characters such as Darth Vader and Millennium Falcon's pilots Han Solo and Chewbacca.
The character, portrayed by Ewan McGregor appeared in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy according to Movieweb. If the spin-off movie is indeed true, the site claims it's uncertain how long the production would be. Likewise, it's still unconfirmed if Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the rumoured spin-off movie.
However, the actor is set to appear in Disney's animated "Star Wars Rebels" series. There have also been previous rumours that Obi-Wan Kenobi will have a cameo appearance in J.J. Abrams "Star Wars: Episode VII" as "Force Ghost."
Speculations have it that the character's story may be focused on in either "Star Wars: Episode VIII" or "Star Wars: Episode IX." Additionally, it may be for the other three spin-off films LucasFilm and Disney reportedly have in mind.
Regardless, MTV claims an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off movie should happen in the future. Rumours of the character's appearance as "Force Ghost" in "Star Wars: Episode VII" reportedly marks his introduction to the spin-off. Additionally, "Star Wars Rebels" is set between "Revenge of the Sith" and "Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope." "Rebels" might build up the plotline for the movie according to the site. Obi Wan could be headed for Tatooine which will reportedly be part of the locations in "Star Wars: Episode VII."
