State Government wants synthetic cannabis banned
Geelong tobacconists and sex shops are raking in the profits for synthetic cannabis but the State Government is looking to rain on their parade.
The synthetic drug which is potentially 10 times stronger than regular cannabis is legal but the State Government wants the drug banned. The drug has the same effect as marijuana but is legal and can be bought over the counter at any retailer and at only $20 a gram the drug is affordable enough that even university students are starting up their own legal weed delivery service. The drug comes in different flavors including strawberry, blueberry, pineapple and watermelon.
The Australian Medical Association's Victorian President, Dr. Harry Hemley has warned customers about the synthetic drugs effects on the body which includes anxiety, panic attacks, increased heart rates, paranoia, restlessness and poor concentration according to a report in The Geelong Advertiser. Dr. Hemley also cautioned users that the drug could cause a psychotic state for people who are already suffering from a mental illness.
"Any recreational drugs that affect (the brain) we have concerns about," Dr. Hemley said.
Geelong retailers have responded by saying that they did not sell the drug to people under 18 years. Given the drug's popularity retailers are wary about getting the fake marijuana banned. Geelong retailers are selling out their synthetic cannabis stock as more and more people are trying it out.
State Government has already said the product will soon be prohibited and there are long term plans of taking the synthetic drug permanently off the counters.
"Promoters of these things try and stay within the law and are adjusting and changing their preparations slightly but we won't be giving them that room to wiggle any more," the spokesman said.
The synthetic drug might be legal but like alcohol driving under the influence of the product will still net users with a DUI charge. For now Geelong residents and retailers are enjoying the fake weed until the law comes down on it.
